Reacting to the virulent attacks of the Insoumis Aurélien Le Coq in the Finance Committee, the resigning Minister of the Economy swore on Monday that, if he had remained in office, he would have sued the MP “for defamation”.

Bruno Le Maire’s last eventful hearing. This Monday afternoon, the Minister of the Economy was heckled during his appearance before the Finance Committee of the National Assembly. At the end of the hearing, LFI-NFP MP for the North Aurélien Le Coq took the floor to attack the Minister of the Economy’s record in an extremely virulent manner. “The commission is hearing a thief today”the elected official began. “Yes, Mr. Bruno Le Maire, you are a thief, and twice rather than once.”he said.

“First, because you stole the election and spent the summer preparing a budget even though you were swept away by the French people at the polls. Second, you are a thief because you methodically stole the money of the French people to offer it to the richest people in this country.”he denounced, without ever looking up from his laptop on which he was reading his obviously prepared text.

“I would have sued you for defamation”

“Since 2017, you have blown up the debt by 900 million euros and you want to make the French pay for it. Is this incompetence? No. You know exactly what you are doing.”continued the co-host of the young Insoumis. And he accused Bruno Le Maire of having “knowingly emptied the state coffers” and prepare “a new bloodletting for 2025”calling for billions of euros in additional savings. On the hospital front in particular, Aurélien Le Coq violently criticised the government, accusing it of having “on the hands of people the blood of people who cannot be treated properly”. “When will you understand that the French no longer want you or your deadly policies?”he concluded.

Bruno Le Maire’s response was not long in coming. “I understand a little better, after your comments, why 75% of French people reject La France Insoumise”replied the resigning Minister of the Economy, provoking some laughter. The tenant of Bercy since 2017 considered that the left-wing party was damaging “this finance committee”as well as “democracy” et “the Republic”. “If I had remained in my position, I would not have let myself be called a thief by a member of parliament, and I would have sued you for defamation.”he retorted coldly.

Before that, the resigning minister had already been jostled by other representatives of the left, such as Sébastien Delogu (LFI), who castigated “seven years of decisions taken by pure neo-liberal ideology” which end with “an unworthy pact with the National Rally”. Even scathing tone from the other side of the political spectrum, RN MP Jean-Philippe Tanguy denouncing “self-satisfaction” of the resigning government in the face of a “budgetary disaster”.
