A municipal employee of the city of Grenoble was shot after a traffic accident. He allegedly tried to prevent the person responsible for the accident from escaping. Hit in the chest, his life was in serious danger and he succumbed to his injuries.

A municipal employee of the city of Grenoble was shot after a traffic accident near the City Hall on Sunday, September 8 at around 7:30 a.m., said the city’s public prosecutor Éric Vaillant, confirming information from Dauphiné Libéré.

The victim was hit in the chest by two bullets. His life was in serious danger in the morning, and the officer succumbed to his injuries at midday, BFMTV learned from the Grenoble prosecutor.

“The person responsible for the accident fired two shots at a municipal employee who tried to prevent him from fleeing,” the magistrate said.

The Grenoble judicial police section has been called in to investigate. Officers are actively searching for the shooter.

An act of “extreme violence”

“The city of Grenoble, all of its agents and elected officials are in shock at this unspeakable act of extreme violence, which targeted one of its agents who was carrying out his municipal duties this Sunday morning,” the city reacted in a press release.

The municipality states that it “is providing and will continue to provide its assistance and support to the police and the justice system so that the perpetrator of this attempted homicide is identified and that justice can intervene effectively.”

The city also added that a “psychological monitoring unit” will be opened this Monday, September 9. “Today, the entire public service is hurt,” regrets the municipality.
