In one year, more than 20,600 men, women and children crossed the Channel in an attempt to reach the United Kingdom.

At least twelve people, including ten women, drowned on Tuesday, September 3, and fifty-one were rescued a few kilometers off the coast of Boulogne-sur-Mer (Pas-de-Calais), while they were trying to cross the Channel. Two people are still missing. This is the heaviest toll recorded in the region since the shipwreck of November 24, 2021, which left 21 dead.

These victims are added to the list of those who have already lost their lives trying to cross the Channel. According to data from the Home Office, the British interior ministry, at least 20,644 people have already made the crossing in 2024 to reach the United Kingdom from France on board small boats (small boatsIn 2023, 29,393 people made the trip.

In 2022, a record year, 45,755 people tried their luck, despite the dangers faced in Pas-de-Calais. A peak was observed during the week of August 29 to September 4, with 3,721 migrants apprehended. These peaks generally correspond to periods with optimal weather conditions for the season, but crossings are now undertaken all year round, including during the coldest months.
