Christina Aguilera is no longer hiding the misfortunes she experienced during her youth. The 43-year-old singer recently spoke out about the abuse she endured and witnessed in her home during her early years. Before her parents divorced when she was 6 years old, the star allegedly witnessed domestic violence caused by her father, a soldier, when the family lived on military bases.
A few years later, the “little” Christina with the “big voice” became known on the show Mickey Mouse Club Disney, notably alongside Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake. But for the young singer, her “gift” has taken on a much bigger role than fame. “I grew up singing in front of people. I could see the reaction of the little girl that I was when I opened my mouth to sing. I was born with something that I consider a gift, and I don’t take it lightly,” she explained to the magazine Paper.
The voice to sing and speak
“I’m going to be that voice that I didn’t have growing up for my mom, to be that voice for other people who feel voiceless in their own situation,” she continued, recalling her “abusive home.” “I had a really hard time processing what I saw growing up, and so I decided early on that I was going to come up with something to say.”
Christina Aguilera already spoke about this difficult period last year in an episode of the podcast Call Her Daddyand how it’s influenced her “ultra-protective” relationship with her 16-year-old and 10-year-old children. “You have to listen to your body,” she told host Alex Cooper. “Fear is something that you feel innately, so in that moment, you know something’s wrong, and it’s not good.”
The singer went on to say that she felt a great deal of “compassion” for her mother. “When you see someone suffering – someone you love… At 42, I’m still affected by it,” she admitted. “It’s beneath the surface. Trauma never leaves you, you just find ways to try to heal it.” One way, for the star, has been to speak out about her painful memories.
