Are we heading towards a “Jung Joon-young” case, the star K-Pop singer convicted of gang rape in 2019? In any case, the BBC revealed on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, that his counterpart Taeil, a member of the famous K-Pop group NCT, had just left his boy band after being accused of an “unspecified sex crime.”
SM Entertainment, the group’s label, announced on X that it had jointly taken this decision with Moon Tae-il (Taeil’s real surname) after learning that the latter was being prosecuted in “a criminal case related to a sex crime.” Its statement “recognizes the seriousness of the situation” and assures that the singer intends to “cooperate with the authorities.”
The announcement sent shockwaves through South Korea, where the K-Pop phenomenon has been extremely popular since the early 1990s. And as proof of the interest it has generated in the “Land of the Morning Fresh”, SM Entertainment’s press release was viewed more than 45 million times just three hours after its publication!
