Serigne Momar Sokhna calls Senegal’s exporters and scrap dealers to a large gathering

Senegal’s scrap dealers have been very angry with their supervisory minister, Serigne Guèye Diop, since he decided to block the export of aluminum and cans. Irritated by this situation which ended up plunging them into an economic situation which does not speak its name, the president of the metal exporters of Senegal, Serigne Momar Sokhna, stepped up to invite his comrades to mobilize and prepare for a large gathering at the Obelisk Square.

“Since this closure, purchases have fallen. The price of a kg of aluminum increased from 950 FCFA to 750 FCFA and that of cans fell from 550 FCFA to 450 FCFA. Suppliers suffer a loss of 150,000 FCFA per tonne. We are also encountering difficulties with the banks who lent us money and our partners who are abroad,” he lamented.

Serigne Momar Sokhna wanted to draw the minister’s attention to “the absorption capacity of industries. Industries can only absorb 1,000 tonnes while in Senegal we collect more than 5,000 tonnes per month. This is why they have payment problems and ask you to wait 10 or even 15 days.

Manufacturers export like us. They buy the product, transform it and export it so why are we prohibited from exporting? », he asks. Worse, he continues, the workers who do the collection suffer the same fate. “In Mbeubeuss, more than 1000 workers sort waste cans. Everyone finds themselves unable to sell their products because industries no longer want this type of can,” he said.

Given this, Serigne Momar Sokhna pointed out that “if the minister does not make efforts to resolve this situation, we will hold a large gathering at the Obelisk Square to denounce this injustice and I invite all my comrades to prepare. » He specifies that with regard to approved deposits “Minister Serigne Guèye Diop must review the decree because, instead of 5,000 square meters, the surface area must be 2,000 square meters so that all exporters can have the possibility of have a deposit. »
