Ed Sheeran engages with young people in the United Kingdom. The singer who will perform at Letzigrund in August announced, on January 9, 2025, on Instagram, that he had created a foundation to support musical education in the country. “I created the Ed Sheeran Foundation because, in recent years, there has been less and less importance given to music education,” he wrote in the caption of a video.
The one who hasn’t released any songs in 2024 added: “Even when I was at school, music was considered an ‘uninteresting subject’ and we didn’t take it seriously. There is a misconception that it is not a real profession, even though the music industry represents 216,000 jobs in many fields and contributes 7.6 billion pounds sterling (editor’s note: more than 8.5 billion francs) per year to the British economy.
The 33-year-old Briton also spoke about his own story, explaining that music had had a beneficial impact on him. “It was amazing for my mental health as a child, I felt like I had purpose and was accomplishing something, even learning the piano or cello at a young age, long before I wrote songs,” he wrote. The goal of his foundation is “that children can learn to play an instrument, produce and write songs, perform, and that learning programs help them learn different skills to enter the industry”.
