‘It’s very difficult to make money on tour at the moment,’ says Avenged Sevenfold’s Mr Shadows

In a recent interview with Bradley Hall, Avenged Sevenfold singer Mr. Shadows discussed the financial challenges facing touring bands, particularly in a post-pandemic context marked by rampant inflation. Between increased costs for travel, hotels, buses and logistics, the frontman revealed that even established bands like his struggle to turn a profit.

under pressure: exorbitant costs and difficult choices

According to Mr. Shadows, the costs of touring have become almost unsustainable: “When you reach our level, all the technical staff are top-notch, but that comes with high costs. Between trucks, fuel, travel and accommodation, it’s getting difficult, even for us. This is why we are seeing more and more bands canceling their tours, and this phenomenon will intensify.”

The singer also spoke about the impact of inflation on ticket prices, making concerts increasingly inaccessible for fans. “People are exhausted by ticket prices. Going to see a few bands can cost $500 or $600, or even much more for some artists.”

Strategies to overcome challenges

Despite these obstacles, Avenged Sevenfold is taking a proactive approach to adapting to this difficult environment. The group is focused on opening new markets, particularly in countries like Indonesia and India, where streaming offers a growth opportunity.

“Indonesia is today our second [plus gros] market after the United States, but this was not always the case. With streaming, listening in Indonesia has the same value as listening in Los Angeles. This allows us to reach new audiences and lay the foundations for the future.”

The singer also emphasizes the importance of reviewing one’s priorities: “You have to change your mentality. Instead of touring Europe for six weeks to lose money, focus on places where the fans have never seen you and where you can build something lasting.”
