“Creating a quality pop song is much more difficult than composing a 10-minute piece,” says Kiko Loureiro (ex-Megadeth)

The Brazilian guitarist shares his thoughts on simplicity in and his approach to composition.

Creating emotions in simplicity: a real feat

In a recent interview with Christine Greyson, Megadeth and Angra famed guitarist Kiko Loureiro discussed the challenges of composing music and how he stays true to his artistic vision without worrying about commercial imperatives.

“Being direct and simple is not a sign of mediocrity. In reality, it is a sign of greatness,” Kiko said. “Creating a quality pop song is much more difficult than composing a 10-minute piece with 20 parts. For a complex song, you just need to add elements — like a plate of pasta with lots of vegetables.”

For Loureiro, the key lies in the ability to touch people while integrating complex elements. He cites artists such as the Beatles, Stevie Wonder and Elton John, who he says manage to balance musical sophistication with accessibility.

“The ultimate goal is to create something deep, rich in elements that musicians can analyze, but still fluid and natural for the listener.”

Music beyond commercial constraints

Kiko insists that his creative process is not dictated by music industry rules or label expectations. “What I do is not at all influenced by capitalism or record companies,” he added with humor, “but hey, you have to upload [ses morceaux] on Spotify so that owners [de la plateforme] can buy a new yacht. I don't need a yacht. Give me more guitars, and I’ll be happy.”

This approach reflects his desire to remain authentic, while recognizing the reality of today's musical world.

Theory Of Mind : Kiko's new solo work

Since his strange departure from Megadeth, Kiko has released a new solo album, Theory Of Mindlast November. This album reflects his talent as a composer and his ability to explore new musical horizons.
