Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan shares his admiration for legendary Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi and discusses the impact of his Music on the evolution of Heavy Metal.
An admiration for the art and vision of Tony Iommi
In a recent interview with Wall Of SoundBilly Corgan has expressed his deep respect for Tony Iommi, the iconic guitarist of Black Sabbath. Asked which album he would choose to take into space if the planet was about to be destroyed, Corgan replied: “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. Tony was a guitar pioneer and musical visionary. He transformed the riff into a truly cinematic and atmospheric piece, an idea that has become essential in Metal. What I like the most is this period when Black Sabbath took a more artistic, almost alternative direction, between 1974 and 1975. This is what gives them enormous credibility with alternative musicians and even rappers. ”

Anecdotes about Vol. 4 and its influence
Corgan also focused on Vol. 4the Black Sabbath album released in 1972. This record, known for its unique sounds, reflects the excesses and experiments of the time. The musician says: “I asked Tony why this album sounded so strange. He explained to me that they lived in Los Angeles and that every day someone brought them drugs. They were constantly under the influence and working in a house. This gave a unique atmosphere to the album.”
Despite the challenges encountered, Corgan considers Vol. 4 as a striking work, like the varied discography of Black Sabbath: “Every Sabbath album is different. Even when everything was falling apart at the end of the Ozzy era, they continued to innovate with punk touches or experimentation. There are always gems in their music.”
Corgan had the honor of collaborating with Tony Iommi as a guest vocalist on the track Black Oblivion from the solo album Iommi in 2000.
