“I want to become a superstar again”: the return of Marie-Chantal Toupin

Marie-Chantal Toupin will sing for the first time in more than ten years in large concert halls next spring, with the hope of rediscovering the glory she had known at the time of her success. Damn mess et Girls’ nightat the turn of the millennium.

“I want to become a superstar again,” says the 53-year-old singer.

Marie-Chantal Toupin spoke with The JournalFriday, 24 hours after announcing a series of three concerts at the Cabaret du Casino de Montréal, at the Théâtre du Casino du Lac Leamy, in Gatineau, and at the Théâtre Capitole in Québec, in May 2025.

“I have my agent Gérard and his wife Caroline, and I have [le producteur] Martin Leclerc with a big team behind me. The goal is to get back to where I was. It’s never too late,” she firmly believes.

Controversies

The least we can say is that it would be quite a turnaround if Marie-Chantal Toupin, who has sold more than 500,000 copies of her albums, returned to the top.

Over the past decade, she has repeatedly made headlines for the wrong reasons, including controversial comments she made on social media. In 2021, she left the set of Big Brother Celebrities after being accused of having uttered racist and homophobic insults towards other participants.

She still denies these allegations today. “They made me out to be someone I wasn’t when it was all fake. I left there with a broken soul, but I rolled up my sleeves because I don’t feel guilty about anything,” says the singer, who, due to lack of financial means, dropped a $300,000 lawsuit that she had filed against Bell Media and Production Entourage.

Introspection

Marie-Chantal Toupin nevertheless confides that she has done a lot of introspection in recent years and has learned to “let go”.

It was beneficial to him. “I had to take a break from myself and what is happening to me at the moment with Martin Leclerc, if someone had asked me that three or four years ago, perhaps I would not have boarded because that I wasn’t ready.”

She worked in various professions, including that of a carpenter, she celebrated weddings, but deep down, Marie-Chantal Toupin was always an artist.

Is the middle of show-business Quebecers will welcome him with open arms? “I think so because, without wanting to denigrate anyone, my current team is more respected than the one I had in the past.”

An album to rediscover

The spring 2025 shows will allow him to give love to the songs from his album with the premonitory title, I will continuewhich was passed over in silence when it was published in 2020.

“I don’t want to miss this album because I love it and I was lucky enough to have a song that Pier Béland gave me before she died. I also have songs by Roger Tabra that he wrote for me before his death,” announces the singer, who knows well that she will also have to make all her successes on stage.

“If I don’t make them, I’ll get tomatoes,” she laughs.
