British musician Liam Payne, a former member of the boy band One Direction, died on Wednesday at the age of 31 in Argentina, Buenos Aires police announced.
“Liam James Payne, songwriter and guitarist, former member of the group One Direction, died today after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Palermo,” a district of the Argentine capital, police said in a press release.
The musician presented “very serious injuries following his fall, we pronounced him dead, there was no possibility of resuscitation,” declared the head of emergencies, Alberto Crescenti, on local television.
He said emergency services were called to the Casa Sur hotel in the Palermo district after receiving a call at 5:04 p.m. local time (8:04 p.m. GMT).
Arriving seven minutes later, a team “noted the death of this man and later we discovered that he was a singer in a group,” he continued.
An investigation into the causes of death has been opened.
Global success until 2016
Liam Payne was, along with Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Harry Styles, one of the members of the boy band formed in 2010 and which enjoyed dazzling success.
The announcement in 2016 of a break in the group’s career, never formalized as a separation, upset millions of fans.
According to Billboard magazine, Liam Payne attended a concert by his former partner Niall Horan in Buenos Aires on October 2.
