The Prince documentary you’ll never see

The director is none other than Ezra Edelman – Oscar for best documentary for his series on OJ Simpson – OJ: Made in America. After the US football icon was prosecuted for murder, Edelman took on another American legend – an artist who revolutionized pop but who always cultivated mystery: Prince.

Ezra Edelman has been working day and night on the project in his Brooklyn studio for 5 years now. Nearly a hundred interviews and tens of millions of dollars invested by Netflix to gain access to unpublished archives. The film lasts 9 hours. Edelman confesses that he came away broken.

It’s 1984 and we see like never before Prince in full creation, his musical genius and the absolute mastery of his art as he puts the final touches to “Purple rain”, the album that will make him a superstar.

But how can we show the truth of a man who has always hidden himself, even in the craziest of exuberances? Prince who went so far as to swap his name for a simple symbol.

Edelman tells of an unhappy childhood, destructive relationships with women. His addiction to Fentanyl too, until he died from it at 57 years old.

The heirs and beneficiaries vetoed it. Formal ban on broadcasting the documentary.
