???? Saturday at the opera:

Judith Chaine presents the concert given on June 29, 2024 at the Opéra Bastille in . On the program, one of the masterpieces of Italian lyric opera: The Vestalby Gaspare Spontini.

“A priestess of the Temple of Vesta, Julia, is torn between her religious duties and her love for the Roman general Licinius. This is the crux of La Vestale, the opera by Gaspare Spontini, written at the beginning of the First Empire. Dedicated to Joséphine and multiplying political allusions to Napoleon, the work was a triumph upon its creation at the Paris Opera in 1807. Admired by Berlioz, the score deploys a brilliant orchestration and a vocality with sustained lyricism that announces the grand opera while inscribing itself in the legacy of Gluck. After leaving the Paris Opera for nearly 150 years, the return of this work in its original French version is an anticipated event. Lydia Steier, who signs the staging, explores the themes of religious extremism and militaristic zeal: does love have a chance to survive between these two merciless poles?
