A truly exceptional sequence in Quebec

The special feature of September 2024

How does the September 2024 heat sequence stand out? It is less intense, but more prolonged and late, especially when compared to the September 2023 heat sequence. Normally, this type of heat sequence occurs earlier in September. For example, last year, temperatures were very hot, but especially in the first third of the month. However, this heat was more intense, so much so that Montreal recorded a heat wave (three consecutive days over 30°, from September 5 to 7).

It’s still impressive the number of records that have been broken, including maximums and minimums. Since Saturday, September 14, it’s really been a party on this side! There have been five consecutive days where we find a daily heat record somewhere in Quebec.

The most spoiled sectors have generally been those from Abitibi to the east of the province, passing through Saguenay. For southern Quebec, it is above all the duration of the sequence that is exceptional. At this time of year, we more often observe one or two days with higher temperatures and then it goes back down.

There’s certainly no one who’s going to blame Mother Nature for this incredible, prolonged hot streak. At the same time, fall lovers will say that it depends on your point of view!
