“Maiden is the next step”; Tom Morello on crusade for Iron Maiden’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Tom Morello, the famous guitarist of Rage Against The Machine, is once again at the head of a campaign to convince the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to induct one of its most forgotten acts: Iron Maiden. Despite their undeniable influence on Heavy Metal, the British band has yet to be recognized by this prestigious institution, despite several nominations.

Morello, a longtime advocate for hard rock and metal—genres often overlooked by the Rock Hall—is no stranger to the cause. In 2021, he inducted legendary guitarist Randy Rhoads, and in 2014, he did the same for Kiss. His own band, Rage Against the Machine, was inducted in 2023 by rapper Ice-T. But these days, it’s Iron Maiden that’s on his mind. The band has been eligible since 2005 and was unsuccessfully nominated in 2021 and 2023.

In an interview for the Paltrocast With Darren Paltrowitz podcast, Morello expressed his excitement: “Mother-flippin’ Maiden, man! That’s been on the top of my list for a while now.”he said passionately. “I feel really lucky to have been able to champion artists like Randy Rhoads, Kiss, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Rush, Judas Priest and MC5, but Maiden is the next step.”

Morello isn’t the only one waging this battle. This week, Iron Maiden took the lead in fan voting at the Rock Hall’s “Voice Your Choice” booth, beating out other iconic bands like Blink-182, Styx, “Weird Al” Yankovic and Mötley Crüe.

However, this prospect does not please everyone, especially Bruce Dickinson, the charismatic singer of Iron Maiden. The frontman has previously expressed his contempt for the Rock Hall on several occasions, calling it “a complete load of crap.” He did not mince his words, claiming that the institution was “run by a bunch of sanctimonious Americans who wouldn’t recognize rock ’n’ roll if it fell on them.” In 2018, Dickinson even added: “I’m really glad we’re not there, and I would never want to be there. If we are ever inducted, I will refuse – they won’t even put my dead body there.”
