Part of the museum’s permanent collection was also closed on Friday following the incident, according to the British news agency PA.

The museum has been shaken in recent years by the flight of more than 2,000 pieces from its collections by an ex-employee. The case had been made public in August 2023.

Some would have found themselves on the Ebay online auction site and the museum seemed to date since 2021. Hundreds of objects have been found since.

The scandal led to the fall of its director, Hartwig Fischer. He was replaced by Nicholas Cullinan, who was previously responsible for the National Portrait Gallery.

Founded in 1753, the institution, whose visit is free, represents the most popular tourist attraction in the United Kingdom.
