Lou-Adriane Cassidy: “It’s on this album that I say everything”

The first notes of Newspaper Share as a cry of the heart, a confession where shadows dance with light. With this third album, Lou-Adriane Cassidy is not content to trace a line in the sand of Quebec song, she seriously engraved a permanent imprint there that is both fierce and vulnerable.

The album plays both the brute force of its words and the almost architectural finesse of its arrangements.

I think this album confesses a lot of my flaws and my injuriessays the artist in an interview. It is a project where introspection mixes with the fantastic, where the inner monster comes to life in an evocative metaphor.

The werewolf is the monster in me, but also a figure drawn from the tales of our childhood. There is this idea of nostalgia and transformation, something raw that exposes my injuries while sublimating them.

A quote from Lou-Adriane Cassidy, Author-Speaker-Interpreter

These injuries, the artist fully assumes them, depositing them naked on pieces like Song for Odile et 16 years soon 30which testify to an inner fight between adolescence and adulthood. To put behind your adolescence is to accept your injuries, but also to deal with them and transform them into something constructiveexplains the singer-songwriter.

Transform yourself by revealing yourself

Lou-Adriane Cassidy describes this album as a reflection on the in-between ages: The more I get older, the more I hang on to the adolescent side in me, and it is a contradiction that lives meexplains the one who has also become a mother-in-law in the young twenty, blurring the signals between the favorable ages at the different stages of life.

Its oscillation between two worlds is beautifully illustrated in 16 years soon 30a centerpiece of the album. Against the backdrop of melody both nostalgic and avant-garde, it approaches the difficulty of moving to adulthood while still feeling disarmed in the face of everyday challenges.

In Song for Odileshe explores another in-between, that of the in-laws. Evoking her relationship with her boyfriend’s daughter, she sings the shades of a complex dynamic where love, duty and withdrawal position intertwine: You are part of the team, but not completelyshe explains.

It’s in Breath breath that the artist sings in a shared shiver: When one day I have given life, will you give me mine, dad?. Ethereal and vaporous, camouflaged by any arrangement, it allows this question. When I decided that, I knew that my album would be in the extreme truth, said Lou-Adriane Cassidy. With this conscious choice, I accept that all the defenses fall in a certain way.

Honesty is healed for the artist who let himself be carried by the vertigo that this new way of doing things.

I do not think it was something that I had experienced before and I also think that, in my creation, I was made to offer myself this therapeutic effect there. But you know … the intimate is scary anyway.

A quote from Lou-Adriane Cassidy, Author-Speaker-Interpreter

If the album plunges deep into the intimacy of the artist, it does it with an epic breath. Lou-Adriane is inspired by the magical realism of One hundred years of loneliness To breathe a suspicion of marvelous into his personal stories. This magic makes reality grow. I wanted my songs to be almost mythological stories, which magnify very intimate experiences.

From introspection to grandeur

The collaborations also mark this album of their imprint. In ArianeLou-Adriane Cassidy shares the microphone with Ariane Roy to sing a fusional friendship, tinged with the difficulty of defining herself out of the comparisons imposed by the public eye. This song is both a tribute and an exorcism. I tell this about this complex relationship between friends, where admiration and rivalry sometimes coexist, but where love always ends up triumphingshe said.

Musically, Newspaper is a balance between complexity and accessibility. The rich arrangements bear witness to the experience notably acquired during the Le Roy, the Rose and the Lou tour[p].

This experience taught me not to make creative compromise, she says. We were ambitious, and it gave me the confidence to create an album that fully reflects my vision.

One of the women who choose strength

Women who marked the beginnings of a fundamentally female alternative sound are the source of its current creation. The power of Tori Amos, Kate Bush […] These are bridges to what we can afford to do today, she said. They are strong women, composites, arranged women. These are so strong models.

The influence of cinema is felt in the whole album. From subtle transitions to evocative orchestrations, each track is thought of as a scene. The final, where Lou-Adriane quotes the names of the collaborators who shaped the album, recalls the generics of the great films, a tribute relating to the collective force at the origin of his project.

A voice installed forever

After It’s the end of the world every day (2019) et Lou-Adriane Cassidy tells you : Good evening (2021), Newspaper is the album that permeates, defines the contours of music that will no longer need anything to set itself up in classic.

Even if the 2021 album had been described as an ode at dusk, it is rather by revealing his interior echoes today that Lou-Adriane Cassidy finds himself in her most true position and in the greatest Naked.

This is my most sincere album. Each word, each sentence was chosen with care, even if it meant sacrificed a certain sound fluidity.

On stage, the artist promises a spectacle up to the album: intimate and grand, vulnerable and powerful. It will be the most constructed that I have ever done, with an advanced scenography and conception of decor.

For Lou-Adriane Cassidy, Newspaper mark a turning point. She is no longer just the young prodigy of Quebec song. She is an essential voice, a modern storyteller that invites her audience to dream bigger.

In the end, the album is not just a newspaper: it is a metamorphosis. A passage to maturity which rhymes with force and not with linearity.

And if her primary idea was to make an album that listens pleasantly to adolescence, during the first walks behind the wheel of a car, the open windows and the hair in the wind, it embraces the result which is quite different.

When you are younger, you have the impression that you walk faster, that life is full of hope. That’s really what I wanted as a feeling. Then at the same time, the album is complex, rich in arrangements, the structures that are not pop. I wanted to write them in full, all my stories.

L’album Newspaper is on sale today.
