“In December 1994, the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London, staged a new production of The wayward one by Verdi in a production by Richard Eyre. The young Romanian soprano Angela Gheorghiu then played her first Violetta, and maestro Georg Solti, who led the orchestra, was dazzled by the singer during rehearsals. Convinced that the performances would be exceptional, he managed to convince the BBC to change its program schedule at the last minute to broadcast the opera live, in prime time – unheard of in the history of British television. Thirty years later, Angela Gheorghiu revisits the images of this historic recording and tells the story behind the scenes of an evening that she knew would be decisive for her career. Two other singers, with whom she shared the stage, the tenor Frank Lopardo and the baritone Leo Nucci, complete her testimony, while the young soprano Elsa Dreisig, who embodies a new generation of “Violetta”, deciphers the challenges of this legendary role . »
