Natasha St-Pier didn’t think she’d be in the news this much. While she won the last season of “Dancing with the Stars”, her participation was marked by a huge clash with Inès Reg, extremely publicized. The Canadian singer now wants to bury the hatchet and move forward, proof of this with the release of a single duet with Agustin Galiana, winner of “Mask Singer” season 6, this Friday. At the same time, the Acadian artist is at the heart of the new episode of the podcast “Face A” in which she returns to the story of one of her biggest hits “Die tomorrow”. Indeed, the start of Natasha St-Pier’s career is inseparable from her collaboration with Pascal Obispo, which gave birth to the enormous hit “Tu will find” (2002), third in the charts and sold more than 650,000 copies. A year later, the duo reunited on their new album “L’instant d’après”, marked by the huge hit “Mourir demain”.

“With Pascal, we had a real relationship of trust”

Speaking to Purecharts, Natasha St-Pier recalls her meeting with Pascal Obispo behind the scenes of a Michel Drucker show. And the artistic love at first sight was immediate: ” I’m going to his studio, and I’m going to listen to lots of songs. I didn’t expect to say this, but I hear some great songs. We decide to make an album. His wife just had a baby, they were planning to take a vacation but decided to postpone it so we could make the album “. The one who says she acquired her French musical culture with Les Restos du Coeur was unable to decline the titles offered by Pascal Obispo : « The songs are too good for me to say no “. And after the success of the album “De l’amour le mieux” (920,000 sales) and its hit “Tu trouveras”, the two artists are reunited ” as if it were obvious » to work on a new record: « We had a real relationship of trust. (…) He is someone who is not going to impose his songs and his vision of music on me. With him, I will become an artist. Before, I was a puppet ».

It was the singer-songwriter Frédéric Chateau who presented him with the lyrics of “Mourir demain” which, at the base, ” was not supposed to be a duet » : « When we listen to the text, it is a woman or a man talking to the person he loves. (…) With Pascal, we had the experience of a half-duet with “You will find” and there this song says things that we want to say to each other “. It was upon hearing the song that Pascal Obispo is convinced that it must be a collaboration of two voices: “ We feel when a song is different from the others, when it does something different to us ” Small problem, Natasha St-Pier’s album comes out at the same time as that of Pascal Obispo“Studio Fan”. It was “Tant que c’est toi” which was then chosen as the first single, in order to ” to wait for Pascal » : « The record company is on edge because it wants to release this title “Mourir demain” is finally the third single from the album, which was released in June 2004, just in time for the Fête de la Musique.

“I wonder if I really have talent…”

The duo is back to success, without however achieving the same figures as “Tu trouveras”. Thus, “Mourir demain” reaches seventh place in the French top and sells 180,000 copies. Success continues as I meet people and make proposals. » recalls the singer, who did not feel that comfortable: “ I’m starting to wonder if I’m in the right place. I probably have imposter syndrome. There’s this moment when it’s too easy, and there are lots of other young girls who would dream of doing the same job as me and who can’t do it, why does it work? I wonder if I really have talent or if it’s because the people who work with me do “Beginning to doubt, Natasha St-Pier needed to take ” a time out ” and to work without Pascal Obispo for the rest. But today, more than 20 years after its release, “Die Tomorrow” remains emblematic of his career and of French song.
