Sludge supergroup Metal Down, made up of members of Pantera, Crowbar and Corrosion Of Conformity, plans to release their first album in over a decade in 2025. With 10 new songs ready, the album is shaping up to be a return to the sources for the group.

An expected return after years of silence

Since their last studio album, Down III: Over The Underreleased in 2007, and their series of EPs Down IVconcluded in 2014, fans were eagerly awaiting new compositions. This wait was prolonged by several obstacles, including the Phil Anselmo controversy in 2016, the pandemic, and the members’ commitments to their other musical projects.

However, guitarist Kirk Windstein recently confirmed in an interview with That Metal Interview that Down had finalized the writing of 10 new songs. He declared: “We have been working on songs and finished writing the album which will be released next year. We have ten new songs ready, which is great.”

A return to the group’s roots

Kirk Windstein also spoke about the musical direction of this album, saying that it is reminiscent of the band’s beginnings: “Sounds like good old Down. We didn’t think too much about it. We just went back to basics, like we did at the beginning. It’s quite magical. The ideas came naturally.”

This approach is reminiscent of their iconic debut album, NOLAoften considered a sludge metal masterpiece. The members of Down, including Pepper Keenan (Corrosion Of Conformity), Patrick Bruders (Saint Vitus, ex-Crowbar), and Jimmy Bower (Eyehategod), seem to have rediscovered a creative chemistry that promises to capture the raw and authentic energy of the group .
