Project “tHinG” Musical encounter between geomungo, piano and electronic music – Saturday May 18, 2024 at 7 p.m.

When the piano meets the geomungo (Korean six-string zither) and electronic music, possibilities break boundaries, impossibilities dissipate and give way to new creation. The acronym “tHinG” stands for “Harmony in Gaon,” with Gaon which means the middle or half in old Korean.

With 40 years of musical expertise between them, pianist Park Jonghwa and musician geomungo Heo Yoonjeong forms, with Gabriel Prokofiev – an eminent British composer and virtuoso of electronic music (who is also the esteemed grandson of maestro Sergei Prokofiev) – a trio which brings together several composers, performers and artists. Thanks to their flawless communication, together they achieve revolutionary production that challenges boundaries and stimulates innovation.

Rooted in Korea but crossing borders and genres, “Project tHinG” allows a form of coalition between musicians and artists. Together, they create performances that enable a shared overall experience. At gaon (center) of music, “Project tHinG” therefore unites artists and ideas, developing new sounds for a project guided by accomplished virtuosos.

Grand gala “Lyric Games”, Sunday May 19, 2024 at 5 p.m.

Proposed by Hera Hye-sang Park, Kyungil Ko, Jeff Cohen and the Wind Quintet of soloists of the Paris Chamber Orchestra

For the very cosmopolitan Korean soprano Hera Hyesang Park, performance and recording are both a self-discovery, but also a sincere, sensitive and honest way to connect with others. Blessed with immaculate technique and a seemingly infinite variety of timbres, her virtuoso lyrical voice reflects the unflinching nature of her performances – always daring, never boring.

Hera Hyesang Park’s rising star status is supported by a series of critically acclaimed performances, spanning from the Metropolitan Opera to the Glyndebourne Festival. In 2019, she received praise for her debut in the role of Bohemia (Musetta) in the new production of Bohemian by Barrie Kosky at the Komische Oper Berlin. Later that year, her role as Rosania in Il Barbiere di Siviglia at the Glyndebourne Festival was described by The Times as “phenomenal”, while Classical Source praised her for discovering “an element of vulnerability and pathos that makes the character flesh and blood”.

On the occasion of this concert taking place in the superb setting of the prestigious Salle Gaveau, Hera Hyesang Park will be accompanied by Kyungil Ko (bass), both accompanied by the piano of Jeff Cohen in the first part. Then in a second part, it will be to the music of the Wind Quintet of the soloists of the Paris Chamber Orchestra that the two lyrical artists will perform. A great Franco-Korean musical encounter in perspective!
