The end of a very long wait! It has been sixteen years since The Cure, the leading group of British gothic rock, last released an album. For exactly 4:13 Dreamreleased in October 2018. But since the end of last week, clues have been multiplying regarding the release of a new album, entitled Songs of a Lost World.

The band changed its logo on social media. It mainly sent black postcards to its fan club members with the words Songs of a lost world and a date in Roman numerals: I XI-MMXXIV, that is, November 1, 2024.

If it was necessary to insist further to get the message across, a poster placed under glass repeating the title of the album appeared on the wall of the Railway, a pub in Crawley, a town in Sussex, between London and Brighton. Not just any pub: it was there that The Cure gave their first concert in 1978.

A record that has become a pipe dream

As early as September 9, guitarist Reeves Gabrels, a former musician of David Bowie and now a member of The Cure, had also posted a message on X (formerly Twitter) encouraging The Cure fans to sign up for a newsletter.

That’s a lot of converging signals, but it took at least that much to convince people of the release of a new album by The Cure. It had become a pipe dream for several years. Robert Smith announced in 2020 that he was working on two albums: one with the group, the other solo.

During The Cure’s 2022 tour, the band even played some unreleased material: Alone, And Nothing is Forever, A Fragile Thing, Endsong, I Can Never Say GoodbyeAt the time, an album release was mentioned for April 21, 2023. We had to wait a little longer, but this time, it seems to be the right one.
