While it was one of the most scrutinized releases of the year, The Crow had to face the distrust of the public, then the fury of the critics. Today, the box office seems to confirm all these reactions.

In Hollywood, nothing really dies.

In the works for over ten years, The Crow is the remake of the film of the same name by Alex Proyas. The production of the original film had to deal with the death on set of Brandon Lee, lead actor and son of actor Bruce Lee, following a misfire from a gunshot. The announcement of a remake had therefore considerably upset some fans who did not want to see the last film of an actor who died tragically.

The producers continued to believe in their project despite everything, signant Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman, Ghost in the Shell) to the realization et s’aidant de Bill Skarsgård (That, John Wick 4) and singer FKA Twigs in the two main roles. However, these big names were clearly not enough to appease the press who almost unanimously called The Crow the worst film of the year. An initial reception that clearly did not help its success at the box office.

Is this the end of The Crow license?

Indeed, Deadline reports that the film only grossed $4.6 million in its opening weekend. in the United States, a particularly bad figure for a film which cost 50 million to produce, excluding marketing budget. It’s an even greater loss given that Lionsgate also produced the film. Borderlands which, according to Deadline, should already cause the American studio to lose 30 million dollars.

If Lionsgate only has distributor status on this film, that is, they only manage its marketing and distribution in cinemas.the project still marks the second failure to which the company has attached its name in less than a month. In total, The Crow barely accumulates $9 million at the global box office a week before its release, a particularly bad score which will most certainly discourage any other exploitation of the license in the future.
