trailer for the Happy Birthdead director’s murderous whodunit

A date that turns into a nightmare is the promise of the trailer for the murderous thriller Drop Game directed by Christopher Landon.

After having been a hit with his concept horror films, namely the two Happy Birthdead et FreakyChristopher Landon had to take care of a much bigger piece with the saga Scream. In 2023, he was chosen to direct the seventh part… until things went south with the evictions of Melissa Barrera and the departure of Jenna Ortega. In December, he left the project, officially due to disagreements, explaining that he had seen “his dream job turns into a nightmare”.

An experience which may have inspired the American for his new film. He has in fact devoted himself to another small concept film with Drop Gameled by Meghann Fahy (The White Lotus), where a woman sees her date turn into the worst night of her life. Universal revealed the first trailer and it promises a rather fun little game of suspense, manipulation and anxiety.

DATE GAME

“Violet, a young widow, goes to a very fancy restaurant for her first date in years. But her budding chemistry with Henry will quickly be spoiled when Violet finds herself harassed and then terrorized by a series of anonymous messages on her phone. Forced into silence, she must follow the instructions she receives, or the hooded figure from her own home’s security cameras will kill her young son being looked after by his aunt, Violet’s sister. If she doesn’t do exactly as she’s ordered, those she loves most will die. »

This is a tempting menu whose potential the trailer reflects quite well.. Like the two Happy Birthdeadthese first images seem to initiate a mixture of tones between a light comedy worthy of a classic romance and of course a much darker atmosphere with the mortal threats received by the heroine. With this heroine stuck in a restaurant and her family in danger in their family home, the trailer plays a lot on the idea of a very tight double closed session with simple issues.

It’s not going very well

The presence of AirDrop technology – allowing audio, video and photo files to be sent by telephone – and multiple surveillance cameras are somewhat reminiscent of the recent Carry-On. In the huge Netflix hit, Taron Egerton’s character had to accept the villain’s ultimatums to survive and protect his beloved, or more or less what Violet must do to prevent the death of her son. Will she go so far as to kill her date? Mystery.

Rather than a horror film, Drop Game above all looks like a little thriller with a modern-day Hitchcockian feel. Not only will Violet have to protect her family, but she will also have to find the person responsible for the threats and murders plaguing the restaurant. A hellish romantic evening which should contain its share of twists and turns, as Blumhouse has largely made its trademark (for better and for worse).

Who is hiding under the hood?

Suffice to say that if Christopher Landon seems to have put in the means for his direction, the screenplay will especially need to be up to par to allow the film to stand out from the rest. With Chris Roach and Jillian Jacobs, the culprits of Nightmare Island et Truth or Darein terms of the scenario, we are not really reassured, but we still have hope. Failing to go out for Valentine’s Day, which would have been a really wise time in our opinion, Drop Game will be released on April 23, 2025 in cinemas in .
