At age 14, Anthony Robles joined a wrestling team in Mesa, Arizona. His first year was a failure, his results were not favorable. Keeping his head held high, the young boy understands one day that his handicap can become a strength (he has always refused to wear a prosthesis).
To best embody his character, Jharrel Jerome underwent intensive training, under the keen eye of the champion. Anthony Robles himself also appears in several wrestling sequences.

He ended up, through hard work, proving himself at Arizona State University. He became an American university champion, finishing his season undefeated in the 125 pounds (56 kg) category in 2011 during the NCAA championship, thus beating the school which had refused to accept him on its team.

Alongside Jharrel Jerome, Jennifer Lopez plays the role of Judy Rodles, who gave birth to her son at the age of 16, the athlete's first supporter.
