In McLeod Bethel-Thompson, the Alouettes believe they have the best insurance policy in the entire CFL.
On Monday, the Montreal organization announced that it had agreed on the terms of a one-season contract with the 36-year-old veteran.
The “Als” acquired him from the Edmonton Elks in exchange for Cody Fajardo in December. He did not want to play second fiddle behind Davis Alexander, identified by the team as the starting quarterback for the upcoming season.
“We knew enough about Davis Alexander to give him the ball. It was then important for us to have a backup with experience, specifically during his first year as a starter,” said general manager Danny Maciocia on Tuesday.
“Bethel-Thompson has won his fair share of games in our league and we believe he will be a good mentor to Davis.”
“I have always believed that you must have a number 2 who can win you two or three games per season. It is not uncommon for there to be injuries in this position,” added the CEO.
“I don’t think there’s a better number 2 than him. The reality is we have a 1A and a 1B.”

Bethel-Thompson arrives in Montreal with 70 games of experience in six seasons in the CFL. He won the Gray Cup twice with the Toronto Argonauts, including once as a starter.
“I believe his addition makes us a better team,” said head coach Jason Maas. We added leadership. He won a Gray Cup. We also have depth with Caleb [Evans] and James [Morgan]who are back. We have a very competitive group of quarterbacks. The team is in an excellent position.”
