record start on Netflix for the action film with Guillaume Canet

Guillaume Canet enjoys Netflix with To Life since the French action film is making a record start on the Netflix platform.

Since its release in early December, Carry-On has already entered the top 5 most viewed English-language films on the Red N with 156.5 million full views and could become the second biggest success on the platform just ahead Don’t Look Up. Same thing with season 2 of Squid Game which, in just 19 days, became the third most viewed season of all time on the Red N with 152.5 million cumulative views (behind the 265.2 of season 1 and the 252.1 of Wednesday).

Suffice to say that the original Netflix creations are in very good shape, even more so with the small box office of the series I miss you adapted from a novel by Harlan Coben. And it’s not over since the French action film about a former GIGN agent caught up in his past and played by Guillaume Canet, Ad Vitam has had a great start since its release on January 10.

We know that French Netflix action films are often very popular with subscribers, like the two films. Lost Ballof AKA or, to a lesser extent, Under the seinewhich became the second highest-grossing non-English-language Netflix film. With his friendly little pitch, To Life by Rodolphe Lauga therefore had the potential to attract people and he exploited it well with an entry record.

With 17.1 million so-called complete views in just 3 days, it achieved the best start for a French film on the red N released on a Friday since June 2021 (so since Netflix revealed its figures in detail). Suffice to say that it is a fabulous score which could allow it to enter the top 10 of the biggest international successes of the platform after 91 days. To give you an idea, AKA had in fact started with 15.7 million views, ending its run at 60.9 million in 91 days, placing it in 7th place in the top.

To compare to other international films, the vampire survival Blood Red Sky had started with 17.5 million views in three days to accumulate 60.9 million views in 91 days (the 8th best score for non-English-speaking films). In the same vein, Through My Window had started with and ended at 61.1 million (6th in the top), when Black Crab had started stronger with 18.7 million but crashed a bit to accumulate 53.9 million in 91 days (10th score in the top).

It is therefore this total that To Life will have to aim to hope to enter the international top 10. However, even if it is on the right track, it is far from being won since the film has not necessarily received a very good reception both from the press (2.3/5 average on Allociné ) and the public (2.7/5). AKA on the contrary, was able to count on a solid reception (3.3/5 for the press and 3.5/5 among spectators), allowing it to attract more people over time.

The audience scores for the second week will undoubtedly be a good indicator to identify a real trend. Until then, To Life is obviously available on Netflix.
