If they are Carry-On a hit on Netflix, Jaume Collet-Serra will already return with a horror film on the big screen with the intriguing The Woman in the Yard.
Jaume Collet-Serra has moved away from Hollywood blockbusters since the huge failure of Black Adam and it was a priori for the best. At the end of 2024, he returned with Carry-On on Netflix, reconnecting with his love of action B series (after Without Identity, Non-Stop, Night Run or The Passenger). Even if the film did not revolutionize anything and was full of inconsistencies or ease, it was a rather thrilling little behind closed doors which proved that Collet-Serra still knew how to entertain us with panache.
The public was not mistaken since Carry-On is a huge hit on Netflix and a sequel could very well see the light of day given the crazy audiences. However, the filmmaker will first release a new film (yes already) on the horror side, one of his first loves, with The Woman in the Yard whose trailer was revealed by Universal.
The woman at the bottom of the garden
Between The House of Wax et EstherJaume Collet-Serra had started his career on the horror side and could have stuck there. However, apart from Survival instinct who played lightly in this field with his shark survival, he had rather obscured this part of his career. Seeing him take the genre head-on with The Woman in the Yard is very attractiveeven more so with this trailer.
While Ramona, her 14-year-old son and her 6-year-old daughter live alone on their small farm, a woman dressed in black stands strangely in their garden (hence the title of the film). How did she get here? Why is she staring at them so intently? Impossible to know at the moment, but the synopsis is clear:
“Ramona (Danielle Deadwyler) thinks the woman is lost or demented, but as she gets closer and closer to the house, it becomes clear that she is no ordinary person and that her intentions are everything, except peaceful. Ramona must now mobilize to protect herself and her children from the influence of this woman who does not want to leave them alone. »
Between the sort of little poem recited by a child’s voice, the strange calm during the meeting between Ramona and the woman in the garden then the sudden acceleration of the tempo with more violent and distressing images (a body pulled on the ground, an imposing shadow, the exploration of underground passages…), this teaser is a thrilling appetizer. The few images promise a very tight little horrific wrinklealmost behind closed doors. There is even something of Signs by Shyamalan with this threat who wants to take over a house and which a family tries to prevent from returning at all costs.
The fact remains that it is a Blumhouse production, capable of the best (Get Out, Upgrade, Sinister) like the worst (Lazarus Effect, Truth or Dare, Ma), so we ask to see especially since the screenplay is written by novice Sam Stefanak (it’s his first screenplay). In the role of Ramona, the mother of the family, we will in any case find the excellent Danielle Deadwyler (already in Carry-On). The release date of The Woman in the Yard is set for March 28 in the United Statesbut does not yet have an official date in France.
