The Marvel panel at San Diego Comic Con 2024 will go down in history as one of the biggest backpedals in the film industry. Once the initial euphoria has passed, the revelation of Robert Downey Jr in the role of Doctor Doom is more of an admission of bitter failure. Avengers : Endgame was to mark the start of an ambitious new era for the MCU, driven by new actors and characters. But Disney’s strategic and creative failures ended up exhausting the potential of this long-awaited revival. The Jonathan Majors affair – leading to the cancellation of Kang’s story arc – dealt a final fatal blow to Marvel.
Pushed to its limits, the studio is playing it safe by returning to a recipe that will soon be 10 years old. After a few productions at Netflix (The Grey Man, The Electric State), the director duo formed by brothers Anthony and Joe Russo is back at the helm of the new diptych Avengers. This change of direction is intended to be reassuring but nevertheless appears to be a double-edged promise. The idea of reliving a cinematic event worthy ofInfinity War et Endgame is sure to make you dream.
But the involvement of the Russos alone does not guarantee a new success of this kind. Especially since a final failure on the part of the directors presented as the saviors of the MCU could prove fatal. While the release date ofAvengers : Doomsday – scheduled for April 29, 2026 in France – fast approaching, Anthony and Joe Russo explain that their return is carefully considered and justified.
An idea that motivated everyone
“Endgame marked a real ending, and it took us a while to approach this production as anything other than a conclusion” explains Anthony Russo to the American magazine Empire. “We’re very close with Kevin Feige and Lou D’Esposito, as well as all the teams at Marvel, and we’ve had a lot of discussions over the years. We discussed many ideas.”
-The abortion of the Kang Dynasty project left an open door that even the Russo brothers and screenwriter Steve McFeely initially didn’t want to go through. “There were ideas that preceded this one (Avengers: Doomsday, editor’s note) but we never found the right story“ says Joe Russo. The director recalls with amusement a call made to his fellow screenwriter, offering him to come and work on Secret Wars. He would have simply replied: “Hell, no. Absolutely not” before hanging up.
Against all odds, McFeely was the one who ended up coming back to the Russo brothers, assuring them: “Come on, I have an idea.” And it didn’t take much for the machine to start. “What really happened was that this idea motivated us all to come back” says Anthony Russo. “We couldn’t see a project like this coming, but once it came to us, we said, ‘Well, this is a story we absolutely have to tell.’” already declared the directors on the stage of San Diego Comic Con last July.
