The four children had not seen their father since May 1, 2021. He had gone to live in Court-Saint-Étienne and Vincent C., an independent home nurse, visited him regularly. His lawyer will say of him that he was “totally disorganized” in maintaining administrative documents. He is accused of forgery and use of forged documents as well as the theft of the deceased’s car. The day after the death, he had the vehicle’s registration plate removed. He will claim to have purchased it shortly before the death of its owner via a cash payment of €500. He resold it on March 19, 2022 for €3,000 after putting it for sale on a specialized website. The prosecution, which spoke of inconsistencies in the defendant’s testimony, had also pinpointed the purchase, on February 26, 2022 at the MédiaMarkt in Gosselies, of two mobile phones paid for with the deceased’s card. The latter had (allegedly) asked him, a few hours before his death, to make these purchases, a GSM for the nurse and a GSM for him.
A one-year suspended prison sentence and confiscation of €13,000 were required. The only daughter of the deceased who was a civil party had claimed €12,000. The nurse’s lawyer pleaded for acquittal or, failing that, suspension of the sentence or a work sentence. In vain: one year in prison suspended for five years, fine of €4,000, confiscation of the €13,000 requested.
