The ranking of Marvel’s most powerful characters has continued to evolve over the years. It must be said that the House of Ideas has a gallery of vigilantes with powers, each more extraordinary than the other… If it is commonly accepted that Hulk is one of the strongest, just like Captain Marvel and Sentry, this superheroine has just outclassed them all.
Jean Grey, from X-Woman to Marvel’s God
Last December, the revival of this superhero made him the most powerful in the entire Marvel universe, at least in theory… Indeed, the House of Ideas has just shake up the rankings by officially affirming that one of its vigilantes is the most formidable of all. No, it’s not Captain Marvel, although it’s well placed in the Top 10! She is one of the fans’ favorite mutants, namely Jean Grey, who has just been awarded this precious status. In Phoenix #5 (signed Stephanie Phillips, Alessandro Miracolo, Marco Renna, Cory Petit and David Curiel), the X-Woman meets Eternityan abstract entity representing Time, the other half of which is Infinity, the embodiment of Space. Jim Starlin’s followers know them well, having appeared in his Infinity Saga. During his interview with this cosmic power, she learns to be “more than a God”…
Jean Gray is now an abstract entity
Jean Gray is the main and usual host of the Phoenix Force, an antediluvian cosmic entity source of creation and destruction. She has a long and rich history in the comics, and her power has evolved to become that of a God… Before surpassing it! He is now a character elevated to the abstract rank to which Eternity himself belongs. Dedicated to the concept of Creationshe must learn to think beyond Death and Life. Returning from her interview with Eternity, she kills Gorr the Butcher of the Gods without difficulty, no longer being one of her potential victims: she is no longer a god, “gods having limits“, unlike her. As the narrator explains, “Jean Gray is the most powerful person in the universe“, and Marvel proves it to us by making her face none other than Thanos!
-Jean Gray VS Thanos, the fight that proves it
On January 22, Phoenix #7 will land on American newsstands before arriving in France (on an unknown date). This number signed Stephanie Phillips and Marco Renna will see the Mad Titan face Jean Gray. The latter now belongs to Marvel’s Galactic Council, whose resources he has used to become stronger than ever. But no more than the fiery-haired mutant, especially since its ascension to the rank of abstract entity. She possesses an omnipotence that Thanos is familiar with, since he also possessed this power (very briefly) in the Infinity Saga, just like his opponent, the superhero Warlock. On the cover of this Phoenix #7however, there is almost no doubt about the outcome of the fight between Jean Gray and the Mad Titan: the latter has his face flooded with the power of the Phoenix Force and he seems to be dying of pain.
However, let us dare to add a nuance to Jean Grey’s new status: Eternity and Infinity are just as powerful as her, and they are not superheroes. If the mutant obtains and maintains such a status within the Universe, thanks to which she exists beyond the concepts of Good and Evil, she can no longer strictly speaking be a vigilante. The entities to which she was raised are not compatible with the superhero “job”… It could be that Marvel will therefore backtrack on this status, or completely change Jean Grey’s place within its universe (which is less likely).
