Obscura’s latest single, Evenfallfaces accusations of plagiarism from former members of the group. Exist bassist and vocalist Alex Weber and Exist guitarist and vocalist Max Phelps allege that parts of the song came from ideas they came up with while still in Obscura.
Accusations of plagiarism
Alex Weber spoke out on social media shortly after the release ofEvenfall on January 8, accusing Obscura frontman Steffen Kummerer of using his contributions without his consent: “I’m really disappointed to learn that Obscura’s new track contains melodies that I wrote and did not authorize Steffen to use. Before we all left the group, we received written confirmation that our material would not be used, but this video clearly shows that my melody was taken note for note.”
Weber also shared a comparative video to support his accusations.
Max Phelps, also involved, added: “Alex had been bringing these parts for a while, and we were putting them into an arrangement for Exist. It’s not just the bass line, but also the guitars and drum line that are affected. That’s 2 and a half minutes out of a 5 and a half minute piece.”

A conflict “disappointing” between friends
Despite the seriousness of the accusations, Phelps acknowledged his respect for Kummerer and his past support of Exist: “Steffen has been a good friend for years and has helped Alex and me a lot, including taking us on tour. This makes this situation even more disappointing.”
However, Phelps also pointed out that the ideas in question legally belong to Weber and that Exist could use them in their own compositions.
No response from Obscura yet
Neither Steffen Kummerer nor Obscura have yet publicly responded to these accusations. The group, which is currently preparing the release of its new album A Sonicationscheduled for February 7, finds itself in a tricky situation as fan expectations remain high.
