Batman and Superman united in a new film? The director responds

The prospect of seeing Batman et Superman sharing the screen again arouses hope and apprehension. Is there a possibility of seeing Battinson in the new DC Universe orchestrated by James Gunn and Peter Safran alongside David Corenswet?

The reunion of Superman and Batman in the cinema is comparable to a daring attempt to enhance a kouign-amann with an extra layer of whipped cream and custard. If on paper, the idea makes you salivate (although only a Breton will survive it), its execution can easily turn into indigestion. On screen, we will say these two iconic figures have a contrasting common history.

Outside of films Batman v Supermanwhich continues to cause a lot of ink to flow, and Justice League that the Snyder-cut saved the waters, their collaboration remained confined to cartoons like the very solid Superman/Batman: Public Enemies.

The announcement of the overhaul of the DCU by James Gunn and Peter Safran obviously brought this idea back to life. A meeting between Superman, played by David Corenswet, and Batman seems inevitable in the long term. But how does this new management plan to bring these icons together? Matt Reeves, director of The Batman with Robert Pattinson, was asked about the possibility of seeing his Batman integrate this new universe.

Fans waiting for a reunion worthy of the name

Batman VS Superman, or not

Since the reorganization of the DCU, discussions about Batman’s role in this reinvented universe have gained momentum. Matt Reeves, whose vision of Gotham radically departs from traditional superheroic conventions, has been clear: his universe will remain independent. At the microphone of journalist Josh Horowitz, he affirmed that his Batman was not part of the main plan of the DCU, but will continue its own narrative path. A statement which therefore seems to distance Robert Pattinson from any interaction with Corenswet’s Superman.

“It’s really about whether it makes sense or not.” The great thing is that there was a story that I wanted to tell with what we call The Epic Crime Saga and all that, which is the big idea of what we want to do. And it was important for me to be able to play this story. And [James Gunn] and Peter [Safran]co-CEO of DC Studios, have been very, very gracious about it and letting us do it. »

However, James Gunn has never ruled out the presence of a Batman in his new universe. Another actor could therefore put on the cape and mask to embody a version more integrated into the DCU. This approach would make it possible to maintain the singularity of the Batman of Pattinson while offering the public a Dark Knight aligned with the tone desired by Gunn and Safran.

That said, when the journalist insisted on knowing how Matt Reeves would react if the Gunn/Safran duo really wanted to see their Batman integrate the DCU, the director was a bit out of touch.

” I don’t know. We’ll see where this takes us. »

I love you, me neither

A collaboration between Superman and Batman obviously raises many narrative and aesthetic issues. How can two heroes with such opposing philosophies coexist? Corenswet’s Superman, announced as more optimistic and luminous, could come into conflict with a darker and more pragmatic version of Batman.

Finding a balance between these tones will be crucial to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past, particularly those of Batman v Supermanoften criticized for its excessively heavy treatment and fragmented narration. And for the question of the “Martha” argument, but we won’t rub salt in the wound.

On the other hand, with 772 million dollars earned at the box office, The Batman proved that the public appreciates more psychological interpretations, disconnected from the notion of shared universes. In this sense, Matt Reeves could well continue to explore this path without the hindrance of an extended universe. This leaves the door open for Gunn to create a new Batman who would better fit his Superman.

Suggestion de design pour The Brave and The Bold

As for Matt Reeves, he said he wanted to mainly focus on his own vision of Batman, and make sure that The Batman 2 does not disappoint his audience.

“What does the future hold for us? I can’t really tell you. I have no idea at the moment, other than I’m focusing on filming Batman Part 2 and making it something really, really special, which, of course, is the most important”.

The next major step for the new DCU is the exit of Supermanscheduled for July 9, 2025 in French theaters. As for Batman, he should make his first official appearance in the Gunn/Safran universe with The Brave and The Boldwhich has no specific release window at the moment.
