Certainly, we are still far from the pre-Covid records where the multiplex attracted up to 350,000 people. But attendance seems to be picking up at the Grand Palais in recent years, driven both by the success of several feature films and undoubtedly by the attractiveness of the recent developments made in the theaters.
296,447 spectators in 2024
Unsurprisingly, here as elsewhere, A little something extraproduced by Artus, met with a very good response, since it alone attracted 33,075 people. “There is a definite interest here in French comedies. This film, even if we are still far from the absolute record that had generated Untouchables with some 47,000 admissions, generated great enthusiasm and helped to relaunch the machine by attracting people who had not come to the cinema for a long time,” analyzes the director of the multiplex, Aurélien Kremer.
Two more tricolor films feature in the top five, namely the big-budget adventure film Le Comte de Monte Cristowith 18,809 spectators, and the romance-comedy-thriller phew lovewhich attracted 9,587 people. Between the two, sure values from Disney studios, namely the sequel to Vice-Versa with 16,820 spectators, and Vaiana 2with 14,215 spectators.
One of the large rooms soon to be “premium”?
Another factor would also explain this new consecutive increase in attendance: the arrangements to increase comfort seem to have attracted a new audience and to have retained the loyalty of regulars. Two of the establishment's nine rooms are now equipped “premium” with enhanced seating and image and sound quality. “These rooms are unanimously acclaimed and have renewed some of the clientele,” says the director, who has seen reservations jump for these specific places.
A real plus, despite a reduction by two in the number of seats available in these spaces and significant financial investments to deploy this new equipment. Enough to encourage the multiplex to transform, in the course of 2025, from top to bottom, one of the two large rooms this time, again with improved comfort. “Even if this will reduce the number of seats, we will inevitably find ourselves there because a lot of people come for this equipment. We note a real demand from people delighted with the experience,” observes Aurélien Kremer.
“Even if it means investing, you might as well do it well”
The manager is constantly monitoring technological developments, which are very rapid in this area of activity. “Even if it means investing, you might as well do it well, with long-lasting technologies that have proven themselves. We don’t want things to become obsolete in a few years.” The multiplex will have to pay several hundred thousand euros for this upcoming project.
Other work planned, without a specific date this time, is the renovation of the entrance hall. “Our wish is that the team, until now monopolized at reception, can work more efficiently in the rooms. It will also be an opportunity to meet the expectations of customers who consume differently.”
Cinema lovers who, moreover, the vast majority, would not spend too much: they continue to enhance the purchase of entry tickets with things to snack or drink. “We expected, in relation to the economic context, a decline in these purchases, including given the increase in the cost of chocolate, but going to the cinema remains an event that people do not want to experience half-heartedly. They budget for these “sides”.
Thanks to the inclusion of the Pass Culture and Pass'Région, the multiplex has also seen the share of young audiences (teenagers and students) increase.
The 10 most seen films at the Grand Palais: A Little Something Extra, The Count of Monte Cristo, Vice-Versa 2, Moana 2, Love Wow, Despicable Me 4, Deadpool and Wolverine, Dune: Part Two, Mufasa: The Lion King, Home retirement 2.
And how does 2025 look?
“It will be the year of biopics,” observes Aurélien Kremer, referring to several upcoming films devoted to singer-songwriter artists like Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson, and Robbie Williams. Among the predictable successes, the professional cites blockbusters like the sequel to Mission Impossible, Indiana Jones, or even a new Marvel superhero opus. The Tuche family, too, will be back on the big screen at the beginning of February.
The Bodin's soon to visit
As for local events and previews, Le Grand Palais is planning several, “even if it is not always simple because we remain dependent on the wishes of distributors”. A first meeting has already been set: the Bodin's will come to present their new film, The Bodin's are going into a tailspinFebruary 19, at 2 p.m.
