The Lord of the Rings: Éowyn had a secret which finally finds a rational explanation
The novels of Lord of the Rings, released in the middle of the 20th century, as well as their film adaptation by Peter Jackson released almost 50 years later, contain a large number of characters. While it may be nice to have such an in-depth world full of mysteries, some people can also quickly get lost in it. The mystery surrounding the character of Éowyn has kept some fans entertained for many years. If the nature of King Théoden's niece as Protective Lady of Rohan may seem trivial at first glance, it reveals something deeper about her role and the place of Rohirrim women.
This mystery is clarified and explained in The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim and even if this embroiders a little on what JRR Tolkien may have written, it allows us to better understand this part of Éowyn's character and enriches a dimension that the latter had already mentioned in the first versions of Book V of the Lord of the Rings. Indeed, when a messenger from Gondor comes to seek help from Rohan to repel the armies of Sauron, the Rohirrim armies no longer have enough horsemen after the battle of Helm's Deep and the White Lady of Rohan evokes the possibility that women would take up arms, as they had already done a few centuries previously under the reign of the young king Brego when orientals from the lands of Rhûn invaded Estemnet.
It is this precise passage mentioned by Éowyn which was developed in the film The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim to give birth to the famous Warrior Virgins, of which Olwyn, the servant of Princess Hera, is the last known survivor. The term used in the original version of course evokes the Shield Maidens of Scandinavian folklore, which joins the great inspirations of JRR Tolkien and therefore finally offers an explanation to this mystery which surrounded the character of Éowyn.
