'Mufasa' disappoints at the box office. Disney's Lion King was set to sweep this Christmas but crashes into Sega's Hedgehog

This Friday a duel of the titans began in United States cinemas between 'Mufasa' and 'Sonic 3: The Movie'. A priori, the prequel to 'The Lion King', which is still one of the 10 highest-grossing films in history, should have won easily, but the reality has been very different: Sega's hedgehog has crushed Disney's lion.

Much below expectations

To be fair, the estimates in recent days already clearly pointed towards a victory for 'Sonic 3: The Movie', but it has ended up being almost a beating: 62 million collected compared to the 35 that 'Mufasa' has achieved. An indisputable defeat that makes it quite clear that the public had no special interest in the film directed by Barry Jenkins.

Let us remember that 'The Lion King' debuted in 2019 with 191.7 million dollars earned during its first weekend. No one would be surprised if 'Mufasa' doesn't reach that number in total no matter how much The Christmas period will help make the falls during the coming weeks more moderate than usual.

In the international market 'Mufasa' has done somewhat better, but even then it is inevitable to talk about disappointment. After all, worldwide revenues of 180 million were expected during its first weekend and it has remained, in the absence of definitive confirmation tomorrow, at 122. Almost a third less.

It is already clear that 'Mufasa' is not even going to come close to the 1,662 that 'The Lion King' achieved, but the real test right now is knowing if it will end up being profitable. With a budget of 200 million dollarsto which we must add the strong investment in marketing made by the studio, things are not at all clear right now.
