The renowned Canadian singer Abel Tesfaye, The Weeknd, announced his official leap into cinema with his first feature film, Hurry Up Tomorrowa psychological thriller created as an extension of his musical universe.
The film, directed by Trey Edward Shults (Waves), will be released in theaters next May 16, 2025distributed by Lionsgate. This project also includes the actions of Jenna Ortega (Merlin) y Barry Keoghan (The spirits of the island), who accompany Tesfaye in a story that aims to be “an unprecedented cinematographic experience.”
Hurry Up Tomorrow is directly linked to The Weeknd's musical trilogy, a megaproject that began with After Hours (2020) and continued with Dawn FM (2022).
The singer announced that his new album, also titled Hurry Up Tomorrowwill go on sale on January 24, 2025one day before an exclusive concert at the Rose Bowl stadium in Pasadena, California.
“Abel is a visionary whose art cannot be limited to a single medium. With Hurry Up Tomorrowin collaboration with Trey, his musical universe expands to the big screen with a psychological thriller…,” Adam Fogelson, president of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, told Deadline.
The film's soundtrack has been created in collaboration with Daniel Lopatinbetter known as Oneohtrix Point Never, who also worked on the production of the album “Dawn FM”.
Tesfaye himself has hinted at the themes that the album will explore, such as the passage of time and introspection. “I look in the mirror and feel old and new at the same time, stuck in limbo and unable to move forward. “I haven’t faced myself yet,” he wrote on his social media when announcing the album last September.
The film is produced by Manic PhaseThe Weeknd's independent production company, alongside Reza Fahim, the late Kevin Turen and Harrison Kreiss. Executive producers include actress Jenna Ortegael director Trey Edward Shults, Michael Rapino, Ryan Kroft y Wassim “Sal” Slaiby.
In the technical section, the director of photography is Chayse Irvin (BlacKkKlansman), while the costume design is by Erin Benach (Drive) y Hannah Jacobs (Euphoria). Production design is by Elliott Hostetter (The Idol).
During his presentation at the event Spotify Billions Club Livecelebrated on December 17, 2024, Tesfaye shared with his fans some of his plans for the coming year. “2024 is almost over, but in 2025 we will have new things. New album, new tour, new movie, new everything—let's close this with a flourish,” he declared to the audience.
The singer also took advantage of the occasion to perform some of his biggest hits, such as “Blinding Lights”, “Save Your Tears” y “The Hills”songs that have contributed to him being the first artist in history with 24 songs that exceed one billion plays on Spotifyas reported The Hollywood Reporter.
The next January 25, 2025Tesfaye will perform an exclusive concert at the Rose Bowl stadium in Pasadena to celebrate the release of his album. As reported NMEthe production will include a stage that will occupy the entire floor of the stadium, designed to provide a 360-degree immersive experience.
Tickets for this event are now available, along with special editions of the album, which include exclusive vinyl, box sets and signed CDs.
