A psychological drama. This Friday, December 20 at 8:55 p.m., France 5 broadcasts the psychological drama Tar with Cate Blanchett and Nina Hoss. Released in 2022, the feature film follows the adventures of Lydia Tàr, conductor of a major German symphony orchestra who meets success wherever she performs. The launch of her book is approaching and she is preparing a highly anticipated concerto of Gustav Mahler's famous Symphony No. 5. But an unforeseen event will upset the life of Lydia Tàr who will ask herself questions about her place within this society where power struggles are important in the society in which we live. In this feature film directed by Cate Blanchett at her best, director Todd Field questions the viewer about the place of women in a patriarchal world where they rarely hold the reins. He gave a fascinating and disturbing role to Cate Blanchett: that of a woman of unparalleled coldness, who speaks poorly to her collaborators and who cares little for her adopted daughter.
Land: a problematic representation of women?
To go out Tar generally pleased the critics but Marin Alsop, world-famous and recognized chef, violently criticized the film. “In many aspects, Tar seemed to be inspired by my life. But after watching it I was offended: as a woman, as a conductor, as a lesbian. To have the opportunity to portray a woman in this role and make her an aggressor, I found it heartbreaking. I think all women and feminists should be disturbed by this type of representation“, she said in an interview with the British magazine The Times.
Tar : Marin Alsop does not mince his words against the film
The American conductor questioned Todd Field's choice to give this role to a woman when it could have been played by a man in a society where the relationships of domination are not the same. “There are so many men who could have inspired this film, but it chose to feature a woman, attributing to her the characteristics of these men. It seems 'anti-woman.' Assuming that women either behave identically to these men, or become crazy and hysterical, this has been seen so many times on screen.” she explained, visibly disappointed by the representation of women in Tar.
