Action and suspense films seem to have found their audience on Netflix, especially when they fit into the festive atmosphere of Christmas. Since its release on December 13, 2024, this gripping thriller, combining aviation security and chemical threat, has risen to the top of views on the platform. With 42 million views in just a few days, it far exceeds expectations and establishes itself as one of the major successes of the end of the year.
In “Carry-On,” directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, a young airline security agent (Taron Egerton) is faced with an impossible choice. On Christmas Eve, he becomes the puppet of a mysterious passenger, the “Traveler” (Jason Bateman), who threatens him to smuggle a deadly package aboard a plane. This package contains Novichok, a powerful nerve agent capable of causing real carnage in a crowded airport. This explosive tension, supported by fine-tuned suspense and spectacular action scenes, won over the public.
Critics praise Jason Bateman’s chilling performance, as well as the nuanced interpretation of Taron Egerton, who here plays an ordinary man thrust into an extraordinary situation. “Ethan is a hero in spite of himself, torn between fear and responsibility, in a setting where every minute counts“, underlines “Variety“. Danielle Deadwyler, in the role of an intrepid police officer, also delivers a memorable fight sequence in a speeding car.
Inspired by real elements, the film is in line with realistic thrillers. The involvement of aviation security specialists reinforced the authenticity of the details. If certain clichés are present – a pregnant wife and an overworked hero – “Carry-On” manages to captivate thanks to its frantic pace and its immersive staging.
And while “Carry-On” is establishing itself on the film side, the “Black Doves” series continues to dominate the series rankings. Released on December 5 on the platform, this addictive fiction is carried by Keira Knightley, in the role of a seasoned spy hunted by the London Underworld.
