Although we continue to feel young, millennials are already between 30 and 42 years old. And yes, of course: we keep repeating phrases from ‘The Simpsons’, old memes, still believing that we could make a career on TikTok if we could and thinking that we are modern for listening to TinyDesk by Ca7riel and Paco Amoroso. How could we not have our own songs that to Generation Z (and I won’t even tell you Alpha) they sound like vestiges of the past?
Losing the mojo
I am particularly referring to the expression “I’ve lost my mojo”which, as they say in Sensacine, popularized in Spain, more than ‘Austin Powers. the spy who hugged me’, Florentino Fernández’s dubbing and his particular way of saying it. Curiously, it is not a comedian’s scam: In America it was used in the same wayeven though until then “mojo” was something completely different.
In Spain, of course, we have the mojo picón, but in the United States it is better known as the bag that carries various magical materials for the practice of hoodoo (not voodoo). Somehow, Mike Myers knew how to turn it into a totally iconic word which, years later, an entire generation knows how to instantly distinguish as synonymous with confidence, charisma and sex appeal. Yes, baby, yes!
Ultimately, this is just one more example of what You have to know how to age with dignity. It’s okay to have unique phrases and expressions, to know how to complete what comes after the little song. “You don’t conquer anything” and to know each of the occurrences of Austin Powers, Doctor Evil and Fat Bastard. Well, you wouldn’t expect to reach 40 being a die-hard ‘Skibidi Toilet’ fan, would you?
