Saint-Exupéry, the writer behind the hero

Saint Ex, the biopic of Pablo Agüero released in cinemas on December 11, takes the initiative of introducing us to the writer's Argentine season and his friendship with aeronautics pioneer Henri Guillaumet. Some only remember the aviator, for others he is an author of children's stories… who is behind this name as fabulous as it is classic, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry?

« If I search in my memories for those which left me with a lasting taste, if I take stock of the hours which counted, I will certainly find those which no fortune would have given me. We cannot buy the friendship of a Mermoz, of a companion whom the trials experienced together have linked to us forever », writes Antoine de Saint-Exupéry in Land of Men (1939). In this collection of autobiographical essays, published in 1939, behind the story of his experiences as an aviator, deep reflections on our humanity and the strength of camaraderie shine through.

In one of these essays, Saint-Exupéry goes in search of Henri Guillaumet, his “ comrade », to whom he dedicates the collection. It is this episode which is the subject of Pablo Agüero's film, in our theaters since December 11. “ What interested me was to explore a little-known part of its history and that it was an Argentinian director, born at the foot of the Cordillera, who took it on. », tells Madame Figaro the actor Louis Garrel, who lends his features to the writer in the film Saint Ex. Not everyone knows the stages of their career within the Latécoère company, which would become Aéropostale. He was commissioned by the company in 1929 to Argentina to develop the airmail service to Patagonia. There he found his mentors, Jean Mermoz and Henri Guillaumet.
