The month of December is about to welcome quite a few gems to the cinema and one of them has just been released: it's called Conclave and is already making a lot of noise.

At the Vatican, everything goes to hell

Welcome to the Vatican except that everything is not rosy here. The pope has just died in a surprising and mysterious way and the Catholic world is in mourning: it is therefore necessary to elect a new thinking head and for this, it is Cardinal Lawrence who is responsible for the meticulous operation. A crucial election for the entire religious organization, but one which very quickly generates ruthless internal political machinations.

Even more than that, he comes face to face with increasingly disturbing secrets: the Pope obviously kept mysteries that are becoming complicated to manage, now that he is no longer in this world. In short, “Conclave” is a film that intends to plunge you into the sphere of power with all that that entails, translating into a thriller skillfully orchestrated by Edward Berger, neither more nor less than the director of the already acclaimed “At the 'West, nothing new'.

One of the favorites for the 2024 Oscars

Released last Wednesday in cinemas, Conclave is definitely being talked about everywhere. On Rotten Tomatoes, the feature film obtains a splendid average of 93% from more than 250 reviews listed. “Everything unfolds with such precision: an improbable novel that Berger presents not only thoughtfully, but also wickedly and deliciously”concludes, for example, Empire magazine. Guardian, for its part, also salutes the performance of Ralph Fiennes in the title role, that of Cardinal Lawrence. “Ralph Fiennes is in fine form as the deeply troubled Cardinal Lawrence at the center of a shadowy conspiracy in the Vatican. The result is a top-notch film.”says the media.

Let us also point out that the music is by Volker “Hauschka” Bertelmann, a composer who already won an Oscar last year for his OST for À l'Ouest, rien nouveau. For all these reasons, many are betting on Conclave to be nominated many times for the next ceremony, or even to be the big favorite. It is in any case possible to form your own opinion by going to the cinema now.
