a surprising connection between a Skeleton Crew character and The Force Awakens

Between Skeleton Crew and The Force Awakens, a secret thread is revealed.

Tl;dr

  • SM-33, the pirate droid from Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, is presented as a potential threat.
  • Nick Frost, known for his work in the “Three Flavors Cornetto” trilogy, provides the voice of SM-33.
  • Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have a long history of working together, most notably in the film “Paul.”

A new face (or rather voice) in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew

In the vastness of space, every situation can seem dangerous, especially when you are a lost child. This is the context in which SM-33, the pirate droid from the “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” series, appears. This dilapidated, partially defective robot harbors a small alien creature in its empty orbit. His arrival on screen seems straight out of a space horror film.

SM-33: an unexpected ally

Fortunately, despite his frightening appearance, SM-33 proves to be a valuable ally for the heroes of the series. Fern, one of the young protagonists, manages to convince him to join their cause. Although old and decrepit, SM-33 proves to be a useful ally, capable of switching to combat mode if necessary. He also happens to have connections to a dark character from “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens.”

A comic duo in the Star Wars universe

Nick Frostwho lends his voice to SM-33, is best known for his work in Edgar Wright's “Three Flavors Cornetto” trilogy, where he starred alongside Simon Pegg. The latter also played a role in the Star Wars universe, playing Unkar Plutt in “The Force Awakens”. The two characters, both having professions linked to space crime, may even have had the opportunity to cross paths.

A long-standing partnership

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have a long history of collaboration, spanning the British sitcom “Spaced” in 1999 to the creation of their own production company, Stolen Picture. Perhaps their most notable film outside of the Cornetto trilogy is “Paul,” an affectionate parody of science fiction that they also wrote. Although it seems unlikely that their paths will cross on screen in “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew”, the simple presence of these two actors adds a touch of humor and lightness to the universe of the series.
