A coin stamped with a logo that you recognized… really?
During the first minutes of the episode, we witness one ship being boarded by another, with a crew of space pirates determined to steal the cargo that the other “sailors” are transporting. The attackers then force the door of the strong room and, unfortunately, come across a completely empty room. Empty, except for one room.
A character, of the species well known to the Shistavaneans, then comes forward, turns it over and picks it up. On one side we can see a logo stamped on the surface. The drawing shows a sort of crescent moon, lying down, with a three-headed spray springing from the center. Everything is obviously well oriented so that the symbol is readable on camera.
Where to watch the series Skeleton Crew ?
Skeleton Crew is broadcast in France exclusively on Disney+. You can subscribe to the streaming site from €8.99 per month or €89.99 per year or with Canal+ offers, from €34.99 per month.
For anyone who knows Star Wars, this visual is obvious: it’s that of the Rebel Alliance! This same alliance which entered into the fight against the dictatorship of the Galactic Empire, and which is notably visible in the first trilogy of Star Warsas well as in certain derivative works, such as Rogue One or else Andor.
But… it’s actually not exactly the logo of the Rebel Alliance. It is that of the New Republic, the galactic organization which resurfaced after the collapse of the Empire. This New Republic, which is precisely in place when the series Skeleton Crew takes place, opted for an emblem very close to that of the Rebel Alliance.
It is in fact the same crescent moon, but this time surrounded by a circle of stars. Pause the scene and look carefully: you will see small reliefs surrounding the logo – the famous stars. We grant you: it’s difficult to perceive, especially since everything happens in the dark.
The difference is, we readily admit, quite slight, but it matters: at this point in the story, the Rebel Alliance no longer exists and a new power has been installed. Logically, it has recovered sovereign powers, including that of holding monetary sovereignty over its territory. The resulting currency is therefore naturally in its image.
For the record, the design of the symbols of the New Republic and the Rebel Alliance comes from the imagination of Sabine Wren, a heroine of Rebels et Ahsoka. « The signature of Sabine, the starbird, is the predecessor of the Alliance insignia », ruled the official site in 2019. It also looks a bit like the logo of… the Old Republic.
