While the new animated film The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim arrives on December 11 in our cinemas, many fans are already waiting for the next feature film live-action The Hunt for Gollum directed by none other than Andy Serkis. A character totally forgotten by JRR Tolkien in his literary work could well rear his head, or in this case his pointy ears.
This character totally ignored by the father of fantasy could well join the adventure
We all know that most film adaptations are often forced to ignore certain sections of the literary narrative, for better fluidity and greater coherence on screen. This was, among other things, the case in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ringwhere the whole hobbit adventure with Tom Bombadil went out the window.
If it can be done in this sense, it also happens that an adaptation can also develop aspects which were not present (or at least only suggested) in the base novel. This is, among other things, what Denis Villeneuve did brilliantly in Dune, part two and the Fremen people, but also what Peter Jackson did with the trilogy of Hobbitwhere the White Council and the elves of the Sylvan Kingdom had been much more developed than in the novel (something that JRR Tolkien had undoubtedly thought of doing in his time, since he had thought of rewriting The Hobbit for greater consistency with Lord of the Rings).
With this new film directed by actor and filmmaker Andy Serkis scheduled for 2026, we could have the opportunity to develop certain parts of JRR Tolkien's universe even more in depth. We can of course think of flashbacks about Aragorn's youth, but also about the Sylvester Kingdom and Legolas' family. Indeed, we know very little about the family of one of the greatest archers in Middle-earth. We certainly know who Legolas' father is – King Thranduil – but we do not know who his mother is. It is precisely the latter that we could well see appear in The Hunt for Gollum.
It remains to be seen whether the teams of Andy Serkis and Peter Jackson will wish to explore the Sylvester Kingdom and the origins of Legolas, but it would be very interesting and would bring depth to this character who ultimately remains very mysterious.
Tell us in the comments which other character you would like to see in this next feature film The Hunt for Gollum and don't miss out on discovering the 10 darkest elves in Middle-earth.
