The Fast & Furious spin-off with The Rock is not dead, according to the screenwriter

The continuation of Fast & Furious : Hobbs & Shaw is apparently still very relevant even if no one ever talks about it.

With its 250 million dollars budget, Red One was a big flop at the box office since it only grossed $122 million worldwide in two weeks. It is therefore a new failure at the cinema for Dwayne Johnson in a main role after Black Adam in 2022 and Jungle Cruise in 2021. His last big success in theaters dates back to pre-Covid since in 2019, he was a hit with two films Jumanji : Next Level (801 million collected for 130 million budget) and Fast & Furious : Hobbs & Shaw (760 million for 200 of budget).

It’s the Fast and Furious Cars spin-off that interests us here. If it initiated the gradual decline of the saga at the box office, Hobbs & Shaw had rather been appreciated by the public with his duo The Rock-Jason Statham. Unfortunately, since its release, the sequel seemed to have stalled, especially with the disagreements between Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson behind the scenes of the saga. Except that their feud is over, proof with the presence of The Rock in Fast Xand Chris Morgan, the screenwriter of Hobbs & Shaw claimed that the spin-off is still very much alive.

Ready to reignite the flame

Fast & Hobbs

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, where we learn that Red One was born on the set of Hobbs & Shaw and more precisely during the climax at the edge of the Kauai cliffs, Chris Morgan returned to his major role in the saga. As he was screenwriter and/or producer of all the films between Tokyo Drift et Hobbs & Shawhe knows a lot about it and it would seem that before discovering Fast 11, the universe takes a detour with the duo Hobbs & Shaw:

« [Le calendrier de sortie] is a topic that should be addressed by the studio. We talk about what will happen, when and how, but I leave that to minds more advanced than mine. […] I can say that I'm working on a Hobbs & Shaw type scenario. So we'll see where it takes us, but I'm very excited about it. »

« When Dwayne returns!!!«

Words which finally relaunch those of Dwayne Johnson himself in 2023. Indeed, a few weeks after the release of Fast X where he appeared in a surprise cameo in one of the film's post-credits scenes, the actor released a very long tweet where he explained that his Hobbs would be there in Fast 11. But even more, he had explained that the continuation of Fast X would be preceded by a film dedicated to the adventures of Hobbsallowing the ground to be prepared for the grand (theoretical) finale of the Dominic Toretto saga.

Of course, this little update on the situation from Morgan doesn't shed much light on the real situation behind the scenes. Difficult to know if Universal will really put a part back into the Hobbs machine before exiting Fast 11 while the saga is clearly running out of steam at the box office (Fast X having collected only 704 million dollars worldwide for a budget of 340) and that The Rock is no longer as bankable as he was five years ago.

I promise, relations are good now

The studio is surely looking for the perfect place to give to the Hobbs and Shaw duo, and given the exit of Chris Morgan, everything still seems to be under discussion. Will it be a film truly linked to the saga and in particular to the end of Fast X ? Or on the contrary, will the episode be autonomous to avoid complicating the writing of the grand finale? Mystery.

In any case, the filming of Fast 11 has already started (a priori) and seeing the spin-off with Hobbs, not yet written, arrive beforehand would be quite a surprise. To be continued…
