Discovered in the series “The Exorcist” before becoming one of the young stars of the series “Yellowjackets”, Sophie Thatcher welcomed us to Los Angeles to talk about her new film “Heretic”. At just 24 years old, the American actress admits to a passion for horror films.
“Heretic” could resemble a play since ¾ of the film takes place in isolation in a house during a snowstorm. How did you build your bond with your partner, Chloe East, opposite the main actor, owner of the mansion, Hugh Grant?
We had long weeks of rehearsals, which allowed us to get to know each other better and develop this intimacy, essential for the credibility of the story. Playing these two young nuns locked in a stranger’s house requires a lot of understanding, because many scenes rely on dialogue. There are very few action scenes, stunts or special effects. All the intensity is based on the scary story these girls go through.
How do you describe your character Sister Barnes?
With Sister Paxton, these two girls go door to door spreading the word, hoping to convert new people to their religion. My character may appear as a naive girl at the beginning of the story, but we quickly realize that she is very intelligent. Faced with the mysterious and dangerous man played by Hugh Grant, Barnes will do everything to find a way out.
Are you a fan of horror movies?
I love horror and anxiety films. I wasn’t even 12 when I watched Danny Boyle’s “28 Days Later” with Cillian Murphy. This post-apocalyptic film had such an impact on me that I decided to make small amateur films on zombie stories. With my twin sister, Elie, we made lots of short films in this style and I always kept them, because that’s when I discovered a passion for cinema.
What attracts you to this cinematic genre?
I’m more attracted to dark stories. I find it much more interesting to shoot a drama or a horror film rather than a comedy. I’ve never played the monster or villain in the script, but I would love it.
Season 3 of “Yellowjackets” is announced for February 2025. What can you tell us about it?
For my character Nathalie, we will finally discover a large part of her story before she took this flight which crashed in the middle of the mountains. I learned a lot during the filming of this series, because I share the role of Nathalie with Juliette Lewis who plays her many years after the events of the plane crash. Ever since the first episode of the first season of “Yellowjackets,” I have constantly wondered what Juliette would think and how she would approach a scene in my place.
