We can no longer stop the prolific François Civil. Last year, he was featured in the diptych The Three Musketeersin the shoes of the main hero D’Artagnan. In the meantime, he reunited for the third time with his playing partner Lyna Khoudri in the first original French film produced by Disney+: An area to defend. He even went through the dubbing process by lending his voice to the character of Buzz Lightyear in the Pixar film of the same name! But at the start of 2024, the 34-year-old actor completely changes register. In No waves by Teddy Lussi-Modeste, broadcast this Tuesday, November 26, 2024 at 9:10 p.m. on Canal+, he powerfully plays Julien, a young French teacher plunged into an infernal spiral when he is accused of harassment towards one of his students. A success that this remarkably accurate story, co-written by Audrey Diwan, despite a staging which, at times, lacks finesse.
A personal role for François Civil in No waves
On the occasion of the film’s release in cinemas, Tele-Leisure was able to speak with François Civil. He thus reveals the reasons why he was personally touched by this role of young voluntary professor in full descent into hell: “It’s a subject that speaks to me. I have parents who are teachers, so everything related to education interests me!“. Note that the character of Julien is directly taken from the personal story of director Teddy Lussi-Modeste. “The film is inspired by an ordeal I had to go through a few years ago. In the college where I was then a teacher, the Principal Education Advisor one day handed me a letter written by one of my students. The young girl accuses me of looking at her while touching my belt. She is 13 years old. Things are getting out of hand. One of his older brothers threatens to kill me“, we can read in the press kit.
“I was very bored“: François Civil talks about his relationship with school
During the interview, François Civil also reveals to us that he had a complicated relationship with the school. “I have a rather difficult experience. I was very bored, I didn’t really understand the system, having to sit in a chair all day.“Despite these bad memories, he still has them.”of respect for the passion of certain teachers, of their naive, proud and idealistic desire to want to change the lives of their students“. Would the actor not consider a retraining in the profession? He answers us frankly: “In idea, I don’t see myself as a teacher but it’s true that I like teaching and transmission. To be honest, at the end of the film I told Teddy [Lussi-Modeste, ndlr] : ‘if everything ever goes wrong for me at the cinema, why not teach people things [rire] !'”
