Two-time Oscar-winning director Christopher Nolan spoke in person in a video his congratulations to Takashi Yamazaki for Godzilla Minus One. The film, produced by Toho Studios and rated 99% by the press on Rotten Tomatoes, grossed more than $115 million at the worldwide box office, for a budget of around $15 million.

No wonder the British director appreciates this opus of Godzilla. Yamazaki was, in fact, strongly inspired by his films. In various interviews, the Japanese explains that Dunkirk was a good resource, especially for directing the scenes that took place on the beach. The man also really appreciated the films of Steven Spielberg (Jaws), and this is felt in Gozilla Minus One. He thus cites Jurassic Park, a work demonstrating that to impress the public and keep them in suspense, it is not necessary to immediately reveal the monstrous creature, but only to suggest it. Spielberg, who also recognized, in February 2024, the potential of Godzilla Minus One.

And here we go again

With its small budget (compared to other productions), Godzilla Minus One still managed to stand out internationally. A black and white version was also distributed in early November in French cinemas this year. The feature film was applauded for its special effects, which earned it an Oscar, in competition with Mission Impossible 7 et The Creator notably. It took no less than 610 VFX shots to animate the Kaiju and 100 for the aquatic effects. Godzilla Minus Onewhich is a tribute to the very first film in the franchise (1954), will follow a next title, still directed by Yamazaki.
